Creative Common Casestudy

Creativecommons

Today has just been an amazing day for me.  I've completed a mountain of work, and received some exciting commissions which are definitely going to challenge my creativity.  I just wanted to share some of the features that I've had this week, which I'm truly grateful for.

The first, as you see pictured above, is for Creative Commons.  I was interviewed last year in regards to the feature, and I'm excited to see it up on the creative commons site.  I use a creative commons license on the internet where I inform people of when they are allowed to use my images, and for what purpose.  I use the creative commons license on my blog, flickr page and deviantart account.  I have no problem with anyone using my images on their website as long as the images are credited to me, unaltered and it is not for commercial purposes.  The reason I was featured on the creative commons website is that my business "Ali J Art & Illustration" is a casestudy / example of someone who uses the license.  I was very proud to be chosen, and I'm over the moon about the writeup.  :)  You can read the casestudy right here.

I also want to thank the wonderful Ida's Sketchbook who picked me to be her Monday Feature.  Thankyou!

Sneak Peek - Mesa Para Todo O Mal CD

Mesacover_2

I'm very excited to announce the release of a CD that I have just finished designing.  The CD is a digipack design (fancy cardboard packaging) and I designed everything including the cover, backpage, the CD and even the lyric pages.  I am very proud of the work and the clients were very happy with the final design.

I'm calling this a sneak peek as I do not yet have the actual CD to take photographs of, just the image that is being used across the internet for the CD's release.  The band is named Mesa and they reside in Portugal.  Communication was a challenge due to the language barrier and the 7 hour time difference, and there were many times I woke up at 2am to send off more e-mails.  :)  Luckily it all progressed quite smoothly, and I'm very pleased to have already received some wonderful reviews about how aesthetically pleasing the CD is.  I really enjoyed working on this commission!  I'll share more photographs as soon as I receive the CD.

I just wanted to share a new stockist of some of my products.  The store is called Jak's Interior Art and specialises into reproducing images onto canvas.   More specifically putting your photos onto canvas, or you can choose some of their great designs.  I'm definitely considering having some created with my cat and my dog for the loungeroom!

Anyway, you can now find some of my cards in the store available to purchase as well as original artworks over the coming weeks.  The store is located on Subiaco Square Rd in Subiaco, so be sure to pop by and see the amazing work they create!

Here are a few photos of my cards on display in the front window (thanks Kristy!) -

When the pressure gets tough......

.... get creating.  I think I'm going through a mid life art crisis.  Struggling to solidify my style and get through a lot of commissions, work and just general plans for the next stage of my career.  I think there was bad kharma in the area I used to work in as I found it really hard to get any work completed.  Many days I'd sit there for hours, then it would result in so many works (that to me) had failed, it was quite depressing.  Even worse is that I'm such a perfectionist, and I need that magic 'it's finished' moment to happen.  Sadly no magic fairy has been visiting me lately and not a lot has gotten finished!!

Now though I think I've fixed the problem and I've moved my 'studio' to another room of the house.  It took me two days to move all my art supplies in one of our spare bedrooms, and it still isn't finished - although I'm close to it.  I'm crammed in the room but I love it, and being crowded by so much stuff just inspires me.  Like I'm living in my own secondhand store!  The only depressing part of the whole move-to-another-room was the sight of just how much art supplies I actually own.  No wonder I've always been poor!  I've decided I'm never moving house, because moving my art will need a whole truck of its own.  I've still got pencils from when I was 10 years old!!!

So anyway, I haven't shared any of the new work with you for a while because so much has been wrapped up in secrecy.  I promise I'll reveal those soon.  Until then here is a piece I finished last week.  I bought some of the most amazing canvas in the world, and it has resulted in a painting I just adore.  I'm really looking forward to pushing my work to the next level in the coming months.

I was reading some blogs this morning, and almost fell out of my chair when I found a wonderful photo of my works on the wall by Anastasia Drawing and DreamingPulpSushi has this great idea to have an ongoing series titled 'What is on your wall' and it was a delight to see the art that people choose to display.   So inspiring!  Be sure to check it out.

If anyone has any photographs of my items in action, I'd love to check them out and feature you.  :)

Huge Clearance Sale

So.... I've been spending the past week in very deep thought and I've decided that it is time to update the brand.  I'm discontinuing a range of products and images, so I thought I'd give everyone the opportunity to purchase some of them before they disappear forever.  The sale will last until May the 31st and I'm taking 50% off all the original prices.  The sale includes jewellery, prints, original artworks and much more.

You can visit my store at - http://www.aussiepatches.etsy.com

I'm looking forward to releasing the new look in a few weeks time.  I'm incorporating new images, new products and new packaging.  I've been wanting to update the packaging for quite some time but it was only yesterday that I was clear in what direction I would be taking it.  I can't wait!  :)

Inspirational Quotes

Sometimes it can be very hard to do anything.  To think, to work or even to create.

So to help you forget that we are only midway through the week, I'm leaving you with some images that inspire me and some great quotes (business themed of course!).

Please note: at this present moment I do not have the links to all the artists of these images as I've been collecting them for many years - but if you do recognise artists who match these works please let me know and I'll update the post with the links that will directly credit them.  Thanks!

I love stripes

It is approaching winter here in Australia.  I'm so excited.  I get to start wearing stockings again!!  I went shopping for pajamas and t-shirts and ended up getting 12 new mighty fine and stylish stockings instead.  Here are the first pair to share.... oooh how exciting :)

Cimg1394_2

I had to do a little close up of my new shoes as well.  I love to op shop and managed to find these brand new $75 shoes hiding on a shelf for only $6.  They are one of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn!  I'm still amazed at how skinny my feet & legs are starting to look with all of this crazy fitness training I've been doing.  Say hello new shoes......

Staying Organised and On Top Of Things

Today I'm feeling fantastic!  I've got a new lease on life and I'm ready to tackle everything head on.  Then I sat down and looked at all the paperwork on my desk and changed my mind about that very quickly.

Still, I need to get things up to date and sadly a few things have been neglected.  So for the past two days I've been working on budgets, projections, a business plan, financial records and everything else in preperation for Mr taxman.  I've been keeping paper records of everything for months, but unfortunately failed to get up to speed with the computer side of it, so I'm finally getting things together.  It's amazing how the stress just starts to fall away bit by bit.  By tackling all the admin work in one hit too means it will leave the rest of the week free to work on some more illustrations - which I can't wait for!

Anyway today I thought I'd share how I stay organised in relation to my work.  The problem with being a freelance illustrator is that there are always deadlines to keep track of.  Deadlines for clients, grants, scholarships, submissions..... you name it and it all has a deadline.  Oh and then there are the projects that have a 'as quick as you can' deadline or a 'soon but no rush' or a 'whenever' deadline.  Deadlines aren't a problem, it is keeping track of them that can be a challenge.  Especially if it is to submit work to a journal that won't be printed again for another year.  Or for a client where your deadline will affect all the other people working on the job as well (which can end up costing you!).  Then there will be the jobs that if you are late, you lose the job.  Then there are the times you find out a few days before that you have three projects due on the same day but you can only complete one within the alloted time period.  What do you do then?  Well first of all you say a very big Oh oh.

I'm going to share how I keep track of my projects.  I like this system, it works for me, although it may not work for other people.  It has taken me quite some time to come up with a tracking system that works for me and my crazy way of working.  I've just used my printer, scrap paper and other pieces from around the house to create it.  I'm so messy that there is no point trying to invest in some fancy system - I'll only scribble and draw all over the pages anyway!

May_calendar

First of all I have a really thick big standard ring file.  In that file I have thick pages with an monthly calendar on each page.  I fill out all the deadlines that are confirmed for that month on the calendar as a quick and easy reference.  This allows me to know very simply when I can accept rush jobs or not, and whether I can squeeze in any special requests.  Or relax by the pool with a marguerita.

Let us use May as an example.  When I the page I will then find myself looking at a series of dividers with plastic sleeves in between.  Using the dividers I separate the current month into week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4 and week 5 if necessary.  If I'm flat out busy and I'm working on a huge variety of projects then I will separate it again right down to each weekday, but for the moment I'm working on big jobs which are a bit easier to keep track of.  It sounds complicated, but it isn't really.

Then between those dividers I have plastic sleeves in which the jobs reside.  Every individual job of any sort has a plastic sleeve of its very own.  It may be an art exhibition, a client job, a scholarship submission... anything I come across of interest or may be contacted about.

Due_date_spots

I attack each plastic sleeve with big yellow dots.  You can't miss them.  Each dot has important dates.  In this case this sleeve is regarding an artwork submission and requires two dots.  One for when the paperwork has to be mailed in, one for when the artwork is due.

Once I've mailed the submission I'll remove that sticker and refile the sleeve under the relevant month.  Which in this case will be far away in October.  I bet you that I'll forget about this until that month when I see it in the file again!  This filing system allows me to keep track of all of the work I have ongoing and ensure that I won't miss a deadline.  This is a great system especially when you have a client that needs drafts and revisions before a final work because you can just remove the plastic sleeve and place it in the relevant timeframe when you'll need it again.  It means I can keep on top of my chaotic schedule, which has to be a great thing.

Client_record_sheet

Most of the paperwork is filed as I receive it but for specific client jobs I have what is called a Client Record Sheet.  This has all the contact information for the client as well as the specifics about the job.  Then when I chat on the phone or have e-mail discussions over an ongong period I can note down any details that are necessary.  It allows me to have an easy point of reference to what I am doing.  So these sheets are filled out and also in their own sleeves along with any other information relevant to the job.  This includes quick sketches, reference photographs or images.  It also keeps track of the time spent on the job, any revisions required and whether additional costs need to be invoiced for expenses.

Diary

Last of all I have my diary.  This diary repeats everything in my project file in regards to due dates as well as everything else I have going on in my life.  A big mash of everything revolving around me which means one thing = organized chaos.  As you can see I love lists, so I tend to fill my days with lists.  I can never find the right diary for me so I just bought the chunkiest notebook I could find and wrote out all the dates of the year by hand at the top.  Then... magic!  I have a diary perfect for all of my needs.  :)

I'd love to know what kind of systems you may have in place to keep a little order in your life.  It could be something as simple as for shopping or a multi million dollar development.  I'd love to know what system you find works the best for you.

News: Madeit Team

Banner1_2

Ooooh I'm very excited to announce that I'm now part of the Madeit team, a great place that showcases Australian designers!  Anna Laura and I have been chosen to be permanent bloggers for the Madeit community sharing information & advice which we hope will be helpful to everyone.  I'm very surprised how many people discovered this before I announced it, and I want to thankyou for all your well wishes!

If anyone has any suggestions on anything they would like me to share - please feel free to suggest it.  I think it is very important to share the business side of being an independent designer.  I literally have hundreds of journals, files and pages of research from my time creating - it is just coming up with which subject to write about that can be tricky.  :)

If you are Australian, on Madeit and wish to be part of the blogging team you can apply here.  One of my plans is to do some interviews with established & up and coming designers - so if you can think of anyone you'd love to know more about just let me know!  Or if you are a designer just keep an eye out in your mailbox.... :)

Independent Designers & Style

Style.  It is an important word and a vital one to the survival of an independent designer.  Their is no limit to what that word may be worth in value in regards to a designers work.  It could be a few dollars, it could be millions.  Every designer will have a specific style to their work which will set them apart.

Style is not something that can magically appear from a hat.  Style needs to develop through exploring ideas, experimenting with a variety of techniques and time.   Then, in time, the style of a designer can be start to be recognised in their work.  This is the time you can recognise a painter from the artwork (think Pro Hart), or a fashion designer from a garment (think Alannah Hill).  However the journey of developing style doesn't stop there, and will never stop.  Throughout a designers lifetime their style will constantly be altering and adapting in relation to their own journey, quite often cycling every five years.

So where does one start?  Well that is easy.  You just need to start!  Remember you can't have style without the journey.  I'm going to share some images (primarily artists & illustrators) to show you their development of their style so far.

As you can see from these examples that the journey each artist & illustrator has taken is quite apparent.  They've started off with some fantastic works which have developed into something completely different.  The early works are by no means the first artworks any have created, but they are a stepping stone in what is a life long journey.  Most of the comparisons have a few years of distance between the creating - and a lot can happen in that time.

No designer can plan what their future work will look like, it is just a matter of experimenting to see what will happen.  Just remember that you can't plan your style, over time it will find you.

So what are you waiting for?  Let us create!

Bunbury Home Show - May 3rd

Well I am constantly seeking new areas and avenues to share my work with clients and gain some new experiences at the same time.  I've heard so many people say that they are so successful that they would never interact with their customers, rather their agents (or someone else) does.  I find that vision really hard to support.  I enjoy the interaction and find the experience both invigorating and inspiring.  Plus as a growing designer there is so much out there that I would never have learnt without taking on every opportunity that comes my way.  I also don't think anyone can consider themselves to be so successful that they don't need to create the personal link to their work.  For me a lot of times it actually strengthens the work by knowing the person/story behind it.  If you are one of those people who does think they are too successful to interact with customers and clients, all I'm going to do is quote the warning from Project Runway "One day you are in, the next you are out."

So in my creative journey I've decided to participate in something that will be a first for me.  I'm going to join a lovely group of ladies for a Home Show.  One day I would like to host my own open home show as well as an exclusive dinner/jewellery evening so for me this is a step towards that goal.  I've never been to one or seen one - so I'm very interested to see how it goes!

I've been doing a variety of interviews lately and the same question keeps popping up "Where do you see yourself in the future?  What are your goals as a designer?"  The problem is the more I think about it, the more I want to try.  If you know me you will know I'm addicted to writing lists.  It helps me achieve what I need to, especially when I have it written down.  Some I'm going to do that right now and set it into stone for the world to see.  Some of the ideas may be wild and crazy, but hey - a goal is just something to aim for and it is up to me whether I can achieve it or not.  This is by no means a full list, it is something I'll just have to keep adding to over time.

Short Term Goals

  • Open Home Show
  • Invite only Jewellery/Dinner Party

Medium Term Goals

  • Illustrate a childrens book
  • A second Solo Art Exhibition
  • Teach art classes at a centre

Long Term Goals

  • Gallery / Retail Shop / Cafe / Bookstore
  • Overseas Solo Art Exhibition
  • Teach art classes at my gallery
  • Teach art classes at university/college and in schools

So enough of the lists for the moment, here is your invitation to the home show that I am participating in.

Say Goodbye To The Boring Wedding Dance

I love musical movies.  I love the dancing and I love the soundtracks.  My favourite movie at the moment is Hairspray, I can't get enough of it!  My favourite musical soundtrack is Enchanted.  I have a terrible tendency to listen to songs non stop (yes, over & over) until I know all the words off by heart.  It started when I received my very first cd's at the age of eleven -  Salt & Pepa - Very Necessary and Boyz II Men.

Anyway, continuing on with my researching of great concepts and videos I came across a whole assortment of very cool dancing.  I would love to combine my love of musicals in my life without it being too cheesey.  I can't sing, I'm not a perfect dancer, but hey we'll be having fun!  My first installment to share with you is wedding dances that are definitely 'outside of the box'.

1. The fun starts at 43 seconds in......

2. The couple looks so traditional on their wedding day.  Looks can be deceiving!  (go forward about 40 seconds)

3. The dynamic between this couple is amazing! (go forward about 1 min 30 seconds)

4. One of my favourite movie scenes is Jennifer Garner in Suddenly 30 livening up a boring party with an 80's classic.  Here the wedding party decided to do something similar.

I hope I livened up your Monday morning blues!! :)

The Evolution Of Dance

Speaking of good concepts, this idea is just brilliant!

What I also like about this is that he didn't concentrate too much on the set design or costuming.  He just focused on the idea.  Would you believe this is the most viewed youtube video with over 82,000,000 views to date and Judson Lapley has now appearred on most of the American talk shows including Oprah and Ellen Degeneres.

Advertisements can have strong concepts too

The past few days I have purposely not been drawing or creating, just researching.  It is amazing where inspiration can come from when you least expect it.

I saw this advertisement on the television and thought it was one of the best I've ever seen.  The concept is so strong and it just amazes me to think about how they would have come up with the idea.  The agency that created the concept is George Patterson Y&R.  One of their catchlines is "We can, and do, move mountains".  The commercial took one day to film and the instruments were played by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Happy Birthday To Me.... I'm One Hundred And Three....

Today I'm a whole 26 years old.

I don't really know how to feel.  I've never been one to really celebrate my birthday.  I guess growing up you always have this little vision in your mind of where you are going to be when you are a certain age, and my life is nothing like I imagined.  Don't get me wrong I have a great life, I just don't have those certain 'milestones' that life is marked with.  I'm not married, I have no kids, we don't own a house, we've never travelled on big holiday, I am not a millionaire.  You get the idea.  :)  Growing up I always imagined that I would have my perfect little life in place when I was 22, and used to tell that to all of my friends.  I never thought that I would be so indecisive and unsure about the path that I would travel.  Even now I can't envision what my life will be like in a years time, it is really unsettling for me.    I like to be able to make lists and plan for everything, but at the moment it is like a guessing game that I have no answers for!

Present wise I'm really excited as my Mum and Dad have bought me a blender and I can start making more fruit juice!!  I got a little carried away with my previous two blenders and broke them a few weeks ago when crushing frozen strawberries, bananas and watermelon together.  The first blender blew up and the second blender broke at the base leaking everywhere.  How depressing as I've been craving my fruit juices!  I usually blend the ingredients together then freeze them in a strong plastic cup.  Everytime I get a sugar craving or I'm bored and want to eat something, I'll have one of the frozen juices.  It ends up taking me so long to finish one that I've lost my appetite by the end of it.  A great way to stay healthy!  Oh - and I love the taste too!

I signed into my Etsy store this morning and they left me a little Happy Birthday message which was nice.

Happybirthdayetsy

I've also been receiving a lot of myspace messages which is awfully kind of everyone!

I decided to do a little drawing for myself to mark the occasion.  Since I wasn't getting any cake for my birthday, I might as well have a pretend one!

Birthday

The past few weeks in pictures

I usually write a lot in this blog/diary, but I decided that today I would try to talk a bit more through pictures.  :)

Cimg1220_2

Two (out of three) of my works at the Perth College Art Exhibition.  It was really hard for me to smile because I was really sick at the opening night!!

Cimg1225

My birthday present from my lovely partner Chad was to attend Semi Permanent 08 in Perth.  This was Amy Sol presenting her illustrations.  It was quite fascinating!  However it was really hard on me that day to sit through 7 hours of lectures from such a vast majority of people as once again I was still sick!  :(  My journal however is now filled to the brim with crazy ideas from the depths of my imagination.  So I guess all the medication paid off in other ways.  Unlocking my mind!

Cimg1230

This is my stall at the Joondalup Festival on the first day, there were two days in total.  I can't even begin to express my disappointment at the organisation of the event.  The organisers had no idea how to run it!  I should have realised how bad they were after the run around they gave me just to get my stall confirmed in the first place.

Day One - changed my stall location without telling me, then placed me away from all the other stalls next to a fairy floss vendor.  I had at least 1/10 of the traffic of the rest of the stalls.

Day Two - stall location was changed again (at my request the day before), but they forgot to tell me they had given my stall location away to another person.  So after we started to setup we had to move location.  Again.

The positive part - I know that no matter how prepared I am anything can go wrong.  I can't even begin to express how much did, it wasn't a disaster but if I pulled out a hair everytime there was a problem I would need a wig.  So now I'm not going to stress, I'll just take things as they come.  The great thing is that I'm learning to adapt on the spot and come up with alternative ideas to fix situations.  Initially I had my stall worked out on paper, but after all the moving around I realised that I had to change it all on the spot.  Which worked well.  Oh, and I also learnt not to sell products at a Festival unless they are glow in the dark or make loud noises.  Get proper spotlights and don't rely on camping lights for a craft stall that is held both during the day and at night.  Oh - and if my illustrations were on packaging for chocolate I would have sold out because anything with sugar was what everyone purchased.  Snowcones, fudge or fairy floss!  :)

Cimg1238

After the exhaustive two days, and being sick all week my cat decided to remind me what I should be doing.  Resting!

Cimg1241

As I rested I watched a lot of lifestyle shows about making the world a better place.  I've just started watching a show called " Jimmy's Farm" which  I really enjoy as well as shows such as "Miami Ink", "Carbon Cops" and a huge variety of other ones.

It is helping me become more environmentally conscious by the day.  I think it is easy to live our lives without realising how much what we do can impact the world around us.  We already live a pretty simple life, but now I'm trying to be even more so.  When cleaning out boxes, cabinets and filing cabinets I'm realising how much paper we collect which usually ends up as waste.  Most of my mobile bills are 6 pages long, and come every month!  Then you have other paperwork such as statements for your bank accounts, free newspapers, promotional material, envelopes, mail, more junk mail.... the list goes on.  I don't want to have to throw these items into the bin, I want to do something more with them.  So I picked up a paper shredder and started shredding like crazy!  The great thing is that I can use the paper for bedding for my pets as well as for my worm farm for the gardens.  We also plan on getting a composter shortly which should help bring the gardens back to life as well as helping us to do our little thing for the world!

Interview in Xpress Magazine

If you are in Perth be sure to pick up a copy of Xpress Magazine this week as I've got a little feature and an interview.  The images look fantastic, and there is nothing better then being able to hold it in my hands.  It is a very surreal experience to read about myself - but very rewarding at the same time!  Thanks Em!

(P.S. you can visit the magazine on the web as well - http://www.xpressmag.com.au Enjoy!)

Joondalup Festival

First of all I want to say a HUGE thankyou to all the well wishes I received.  I haven't had the chance to personally reply to all the e-mails or comments, but I will get onto that very soon!  It means a lot to me.

I'm still working on this top secret project..... but I'm almost finished, and it is getting to the very exciting stage.  :)  Sadly I'm still sick and think I will still be for a few more days yet, but at least the light at the end of the tunnel approaches.

I'm just going to do a very quick surprise post - I'm now in the Joondalup Festival!  After they made their error they managed to put my stall in and I can't wait!  It is this weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm - 9pm.  If you come on down, be sure to drop by my stall and say hello!
