Wow, what a wonderful experience it has been to be on this residency in Margaret River at the Community Centre. The exhibition is finishing up today, and I've finally had the chance to take some pictures to share with you all. Close up details of the new artworks will come through over the coming weeks.
Part Two on its way shortly.........
Some nights I dream about teacups. Lovely beautiful teacups. Teacups covered in patterns, flowers and gold rims. The type you find at grandma's house or like treasured hidden away in old boxes. I love the thought of collecting them, although I don't know what I'd do with them, as I don't drink tea.
This was created after I dreamt one night of the collections of things we have and treasure. I hadn't touched this canvas for weeks, and something about the paper placement just cried out 'teacup boxes, teacup boxes'.
Got to share the good news. Whipped up an illustration for the beauty page of the recent Peppermint Magazine. Thankyou Peppermint for a wonderful opportunity - I really enjoyed it!
I've been on a bit of a journey these past few months, wanting to bring not only more to my work, but also show people a bit of the behind the scenes of how my artwork is created. My wonderful friend Lauren captured a stop motion video of myself creating one of my artworks.
Watch and enjoy!

A week or so ago I was one of the participating artists in the Drawn Together event in Fremantle. The event has now finished, and is ending with an exhibition at the Moores Building Gallery. I'm one of the lucky invited artists to participate in it.

The artworks I submitted were directly in relation to the event, inspired by the opening night. I could have exhibited past artworks, but I wanted to put some new ones in.
"Lean On Me"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm (12"x 12"x 1.5")
An artwork all about performing in front of a crowd, a person standing on her shoulders. Collaged text is about a romantic drama.
"Spellbound"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm (12"x 12"x 1.5")
Here a girl is dreaming and captivated by a performing figure. The collage is a combination of musical notes & I think it is german script.
"You Cast A Spell On Me"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm
There was something about the girl playing the accordian that completely entranced me, I still lose my breath thinking about her. The soft, sweet sounds.... the feelings that overwhelmed me. Her music was almost as beautiful as she was. She made a huge chunky ugly accordian look light and golden. The collaged text is from a number of books - one about poetry and the other about war. I love the hand scripting on the pages from the original owners, and totally love that one of the scripts actually reads "Fremantle" which was totally by accident.

Next event on the list is one for the ARTillery Youth Festival being held here in Perth in December with Amnesty International. The exhibition looks like it will be rather controversial.
From the website -
The Masterpeace Exhibition is a critically engaged, visual exploration of current international human rights stories and will showcase the work of local artists, whose creative interpretations will become catalysts of conversation.
Each artwork in this exhibition will be created in response the story of an unfairly imprisoned individual at risk, people whose right to freedom is currently being campaigned for by Amnesty International. Where possible, images of the artworks will be sent to the imprisoned individuals. This is a human rights exhibition which aims to generate discussion and meaningful impact.
The exhibition will run from 6 to 10 December at Manhattan's Bar, with the Monday 6 December opening event including live music and guest speakers.
The individual I've been given to create an artwork in response to is Hengameh Shahidi who is an Iranian human rights defender and was sentenced to six years in prison in November 2009. I have no idea what I'm doing yet, and I've got three weeks to finish the work. It will be an interesting subject to research, and very challenging at the same time. I can already feel the tension and drama that will slide into the work.

As each day flies by, I'm feeling happier about life. About the business, the love I have for my family, the thirst I have to do everything to the best of my ability.
The past few weeks have been brewing into something awesome. I feel like I'm on an absolute roll. I've gone from doing very little artwork at the beginning of the year (having a baby & being consumed by administration) to finishing sooo many paintings all at once. It is exhilirating!
Yesterday I spent the day collaging canvases. The pages of books that I used were around 90 years old. The paper was fragile, it crumbled in my hands, it smelt musty, had a deep coffee tinge to the edges, and I absolutely fell in LOVE with them. I couldn't stop touching the paper. Each painting I had to collage twice due to the delicacy of the paper, but now that it is all secured to the canvas, it just has the most incredible texture when I run my fingers over it. Is it wrong that I want to sleep on a pillow of vintage paper?
And here is some art -
"You Are A Butterfly"
acrylic on canvas, 2010
101cm x 101cm x 4cm
Private Commission finished last week of a gorgeous girl called Lily. It was big, took me a lot longer then I had envisioned, but I absolutely love the final piece. It was also the first commission I had since having Eloise, so it was a great project to throw myself into.
Some detail shots (because a small picture can never quite capture everything!) -
Next, a collaged painting that was finished in Dwellingup for my solo art exhibition back in October (which seems like a lifetime ago!)
"You're A Designer Shade"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
51cm x 60cm x 4cm
I took the painting to a professional photographer over the weekend to get some good pictures, and can't believe how great the quality is. You can read every single word of the pages in the photo!
Finally, another collaged painting that I also finished for my solo show back in October. This is one of those artworks that somehow I finished, can't really remember how I did it, yet it has become one of my new favourite pieces. Excitedly, we also captured this in stop motion, which we'll release in the coming weeks. Fas-cin-ating!
"I'll Be There With Bells On"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
61cm x 61cm x 4cm
"On My Own"
Ink, pencil, collage, watercolour on archival paper, 2010
28cm x 38cm (11.02 x 15.35)
This artwork is a portrait of Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter. A commission from a client, due to be published in an anthology about famous female literary figures at the end of this year.
Original available.
My exhibition has opened! What a whirlwind few days, I'm totally exhausted yet excited at the same time!
I've got some pictures to share of the exhibition, I'll do more detailed posts about each individual artwork throughout the week. At the exhibition close I'll put the available artworks up in the shop, as well as all the new products. I have lots of new works to share!
This exhibition speaks of a journey I undertook on my artists residency in Dwellingup, September 26th - October 17th 2010. The body of work explores relationships, femininity, things that we long for, the identities that we present to the world and the multi facted lives we wrap ourselves up in.
We can live as simple or as complicated as we'd like but nothing is as important as how we relate to those we share our lives with.
