A week or so ago I was one of the participating artists in the Drawn Together event in Fremantle. The event has now finished, and is ending with an exhibition at the Moores Building Gallery. I'm one of the lucky invited artists to participate in it.

The artworks I submitted were directly in relation to the event, inspired by the opening night. I could have exhibited past artworks, but I wanted to put some new ones in.

"Lean On Me"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm (12"x 12"x 1.5")
An artwork all about performing in front of a crowd, a person standing on her shoulders. Collaged text is about a romantic drama.
"Spellbound"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm (12"x 12"x 1.5")
Here a girl is dreaming and captivated by a performing figure. The collage is a combination of musical notes & I think it is german script.

"You Cast A Spell On Me"
mixed media on canvas, 2010
30cm x 30cm x 4cm

There was something about the girl playing the accordian that completely entranced me, I still lose my breath thinking about her. The soft, sweet sounds.... the feelings that overwhelmed me. Her music was almost as beautiful as she was. She made a huge chunky ugly accordian look light and golden. The collaged text is from a number of books - one about poetry and the other about war. I love the hand scripting on the pages from the original owners, and totally love that one of the scripts actually reads "Fremantle" which was totally by accident.

Next event on the list is one for the ARTillery Youth Festival being held here in Perth in December with Amnesty International. The exhibition looks like it will be rather controversial.
From the website -
The Masterpeace Exhibition is a critically engaged, visual exploration of current international human rights stories and will showcase the work of local artists, whose creative interpretations will become catalysts of conversation.
Each artwork in this exhibition will be created in response the story of an unfairly imprisoned individual at risk, people whose right to freedom is currently being campaigned for by Amnesty International. Where possible, images of the artworks will be sent to the imprisoned individuals. This is a human rights exhibition which aims to generate discussion and meaningful impact.
The exhibition will run from 6 to 10 December at Manhattan's Bar, with the Monday 6 December opening event including live music and guest speakers.
The individual I've been given to create an artwork in response to is Hengameh Shahidi who is an Iranian human rights defender and was sentenced to six years in prison in November 2009. I have no idea what I'm doing yet, and I've got three weeks to finish the work. It will be an interesting subject to research, and very challenging at the same time. I can already feel the tension and drama that will slide into the work.
