Need Your Help

***************edited again on the 1st July***************

My illustration was taken and put onto a t-shirt without my permission.

Please do not purchase the top if you see it.

It seems no matter what I say about the subject, I offend someone.  That isn't my intention.  I just want the image removed from the top.  Why?  Because my permission wasn't asked, the integrity of the original artwork has been altered and not only has copyright infringement occurred but my moral rights have also been compromised.

I'm following legal avenues to rectify the situation.

If you have something to say - keep it respectable.

Whoops..... a few magazines too many.....

I walked into the biggest bookstore we have in Western Australia, Borders and got lost within the shelving.  I walked in empty handed and left lugging about 8 kilograms of magazines, my bank account only a little bit smaller.  LOL!

CIMG1751
The best buys were the Vogue and Marie Claire magazines.  Both had additional 'bonus' magazines with them (one on couture which I adore) and are super, super thick.  You may notice that some of the issues aren't in English.  Marie Claire is Italian and the other is another European country (I think French, but I can't remember)  I don't tend to read articles in magazines, and I find the european issues to be full of the types of images that set my creative mode off like a rocket.  The other magazines are:
Vive - women in business
OK - trashy celebrity mag which always has great pictures (over photoshopped of course, but perfect for character referencing)
Hair - full of some of the coolest and wackiest haircuts around!
Vogue Australia - It has Alice on the cover from Australia's Next Top Model.  How could I not buy it?

CIMG1753
Just look at how thick these beauties are.  Oh - and these issues of Marie Claire & Vogue with the bonus magazine were only $15 each!  That is crazy talk in the world of magazines..... especially since they are about six times the size of a standard Australian issue.  So, if you haven't heard from me you can guarantee that I'm sitting on my velvet red lounge cutting & pasting images from the magazines into my sketchbook and drawing like a crazy lady!

P.S. I'm always seeking new magazines to read.  Others that I read or subscribe to are Frankie, Yen, Karen, Harpaars Bazaar, Amelia's Magazine, N.E.E.T., Home and Living, Real Living and Home Beautiful.  I love magazines about fashion, graphic design and fashion illustration.  Please let me know of any that you love!!

A Letter To You My Dear Illustration

Dear Illustration,

I know I've been terrible lately.  I've been thinking about you, but honestly I haven't paid you as much attention as I should have.  I've been caught up in life, in packaging designs, new logos, website coding, running at the beach and having fun eating watermelon (which my dog loves more then me!).  I apologise, I promise that I'll make it up to you.

In fact I'm going to make you a promise right now.  For every day in July I'm going to illustrate a new work every day.  I know that is a big ask, but I need to do it.  That means there won't be any day that month that I'll neglect you.  By the 1st of July I'm also releasing my new range of products, packaging, a new website and everything else in relation to your new look.  So in July you are having a whole new wardrobe, and you will be getting a whole lot of attention from me.  I hope then that you'll forgive me, so start counting down the days.....

Love, Ali J

My new studio space LOVES me

Studio1
This is my fabulous chunky wooden desk with drawers full of supplies, a desk covered with research material and walls covered in images to inspire me.  I've got a little dream-catcher hanging from the roof to make sure that none of my crazy thoughts disappear whilst I work!

Studio2
I have little bookshelves scattered throughout the room.  Upon this one I have little glass jars full of bits and pieces such as buttons.  Beside them stands a wise owl watching.

Studio6
Here sit two fairies from the other realm.  They were a present from my brothers for my 21st birthday, and I treasure them.  Behind that my dog from my childhood Shadow watches over me.

Studio7
I love to have a pile of books to read constantly.  I believe that all professionals continue to research all of the time in their chosen field.  Researching keeps me inspired and helps me to grow as an artist.  These are from my local library and I have a never ending addiction to books of any sort.  These books center around graphic design, fashion design and website coding.

Studio4
I always have a stack of fantasy & science fiction books lying close for those moments I need to escape into my own world.  As you can see from the creasing on the spines many of the titles have been read and re-read plenty of times.  This is only a snippet of my collection.  My favourite authors are Juliet Marillier, Raymond E Feist and Anne McCaffrey.

Studio12
We always need companions beside us when we create.  These are just a few of the characters watching over me, ensuring that everything is just perfect.

Studio11
Oh - and this is a reminder that I need to get back to work!  I'm finishing off a commission right now, and this is generally how I work on the sketches.  I surround myself with reference images, and just create!

So with that, I'm off to create.  Enjoy your day!  xox

Never Alone

Never Alone
"Never Alone"
76cm x 92cm
Acrylic on Canvas

This is one of my newest works for the City of Joondalup Art Exhibition opening this Wednesday night (4th of June).  I really enjoyed working on this painting, and could have continued for days.  However my deadline was 8.30am this morning (and I was still working on it at 8.45am!)

This painting has a closer bond to me then any of my other paintings.  I've used quite a lot of symbolism in the work for references and meanings that can't truly be interpreted without knowing who I am as a person.  I'll try to interpret some of the meanings for you.

The figure in the painting is quiet, but not lonely.  She is reflective of me as a person.  Rather simple, plain and searching for something.  She is either taking her jacket off, or putting it on - which we do not know.  A link to my own life right now as I'm not quite sure what path to take next.  The jacket is made up of boldly coloured peacock feathers as a reference to my family (they have peacocks) and how their love is wrapped around me, and there is plenty of it (lots of feathers with no end in sight).  Once again linking to the jacket maybe coming off or on - will I go away, or will I stay close?

The background has a tree that is old and weathered - a link to the fond love I have for history and the environment.  I'm a country girl at heart and am my most happy outdoors in the open - hence the wide open field of grass.  The tree, that may have been dead, is now coming back to life with small sprouts of leaves, showing that there will be a change in the air.  What change I do not know but it is coming.

The tree extends into the ground, behind the figure to reveal tree roots linked and joined in unison.  This reference is to my past which keeps revealling itself, yet doesn't reappear as the present.  It is my foundation, what makes me who I am today.  The links of my past are stronger then my future.  The green field is flat with no perspective or path to travel because I don't know where to find it.  There are no hills, no sun, and nothing in the distance.  Not because there is no hope, but rather that this reflects a moment in time where certains elements are just unknown to me.

In the tree creatures and eyes peer out, watching and waiting.  No matter where I am, or what I am doing I always feel as though someone is watching me.  Everytime I walk into a room I feel eyes on me, and I'd rather slink to a corner away from the crowd so they can watch me from a distance.  There is no detail to the creatures as I can never put a face to the issues that I'm constantly fighting with my own self esteem.

The figure is wearing a simple purple dress, purple is my favourite colour.  Simple because I'm an ordinary girl who doesn't like to stand out of the crowd.  The hair of the figure is long as I've always wanted long hair that rests softly around my face.  The whole scene is surrounded by a massive blue sky of clouds and a storm brewing.  This symbolises the challenges that may lie forth in my future.

There are other meanings and references, but this is the basic outline.  My paintings aren't just of figures, I put so much secret meaning into them as I work.  The medium I use, the words I choose for collage, even down to the paper.  Each choice full of secrets and hidden meanings.  I just felt with this work that I had to share those details in order to give you a greater understanding of how much this work means to me.  It was one of those works that I just had to do before I could create anything else.  A turning point in my life.

The book that inspired the idea and the concepts was "The Bridei Chronicles" by Juliet Marillier.  A fantasy story about a witch girl and a boy destined to be king, and the love that grows between them against all odds.  The book is based on celtic lore as well as historical fact and resonates with me strongly.  I'm definitely a fan of science fiction or fantasy!!

The thunder crashes as the storm dwells

I've just arrived home after spending the last 7 hours outdoors in the middle of a fierce storm full of thunder and lightning.  When I say outdoors I mean with no shelter and raining like crazy as I ran around umpiring netball games at the biggest state event of the year.  I'm sitting here cold and wet, but I'm not miserable - just full of joy and excitement.  I'm so excited to announce that I now have an agent!  My agent will be responsible for all of my stockists in Western Australia in regards to my greeting cards & prints and the website will be updated with that information shortly.  I still can't believe it.  I've been thinking a lot lately and realised that I need to free up administration time to make more studio time so this has happened just when I needed it.  I can't wait to show you the painting that I'm currently working on.  It has been inspired by celtic dreams, whimsical creatures and is very dreamy.  Of course still remaining modern and fashionable at the same time.  :)  Enjoy your weekend and send lots of warmth and sunshine my way!  (I've still got two more days of the netball carnival to endure!!!)

Opening Night @ The Clothespeg Exhibition

Tonight I attended the opening night of "The Clothespeg Exhibition 2" which featured two of my works.  It was a strange location to have the exhibition @ LaLaOrange, a clothing store on William Street in Perth.  The location is great & the clothes, but the store is absolutely tiny, like a hallway that could barely fit 3 people wide.  So being the opening night, everyone wanted to see the exhibition but ended up spending more time outside on the sidewalk then in.  Oh - and the drinks were at the back of the store and there was barely a chance anyone could get to the drinks in between the long lines trying to see the artwork.  Oh well.  It was still pretty cool to see my art up!  :)  I submitted three works in total, and two were selected.

Here are some photos of the event -

I love stripes

It is approaching winter here in Australia.  I'm so excited.  I get to start wearing stockings again!!  I went shopping for pajamas and t-shirts and ended up getting 12 new mighty fine and stylish stockings instead.  Here are the first pair to share.... oooh how exciting :)

Cimg1394_2

I had to do a little close up of my new shoes as well.  I love to op shop and managed to find these brand new $75 shoes hiding on a shelf for only $6.  They are one of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn!  I'm still amazed at how skinny my feet & legs are starting to look with all of this crazy fitness training I've been doing.  Say hello new shoes......

Staying Organised and On Top Of Things

Today I'm feeling fantastic!  I've got a new lease on life and I'm ready to tackle everything head on.  Then I sat down and looked at all the paperwork on my desk and changed my mind about that very quickly.

Still, I need to get things up to date and sadly a few things have been neglected.  So for the past two days I've been working on budgets, projections, a business plan, financial records and everything else in preperation for Mr taxman.  I've been keeping paper records of everything for months, but unfortunately failed to get up to speed with the computer side of it, so I'm finally getting things together.  It's amazing how the stress just starts to fall away bit by bit.  By tackling all the admin work in one hit too means it will leave the rest of the week free to work on some more illustrations - which I can't wait for!

Anyway today I thought I'd share how I stay organised in relation to my work.  The problem with being a freelance illustrator is that there are always deadlines to keep track of.  Deadlines for clients, grants, scholarships, submissions..... you name it and it all has a deadline.  Oh and then there are the projects that have a 'as quick as you can' deadline or a 'soon but no rush' or a 'whenever' deadline.  Deadlines aren't a problem, it is keeping track of them that can be a challenge.  Especially if it is to submit work to a journal that won't be printed again for another year.  Or for a client where your deadline will affect all the other people working on the job as well (which can end up costing you!).  Then there will be the jobs that if you are late, you lose the job.  Then there are the times you find out a few days before that you have three projects due on the same day but you can only complete one within the alloted time period.  What do you do then?  Well first of all you say a very big Oh oh.

I'm going to share how I keep track of my projects.  I like this system, it works for me, although it may not work for other people.  It has taken me quite some time to come up with a tracking system that works for me and my crazy way of working.  I've just used my printer, scrap paper and other pieces from around the house to create it.  I'm so messy that there is no point trying to invest in some fancy system - I'll only scribble and draw all over the pages anyway!

May_calendar

First of all I have a really thick big standard ring file.  In that file I have thick pages with an monthly calendar on each page.  I fill out all the deadlines that are confirmed for that month on the calendar as a quick and easy reference.  This allows me to know very simply when I can accept rush jobs or not, and whether I can squeeze in any special requests.  Or relax by the pool with a marguerita.

Let us use May as an example.  When I the page I will then find myself looking at a series of dividers with plastic sleeves in between.  Using the dividers I separate the current month into week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4 and week 5 if necessary.  If I'm flat out busy and I'm working on a huge variety of projects then I will separate it again right down to each weekday, but for the moment I'm working on big jobs which are a bit easier to keep track of.  It sounds complicated, but it isn't really.

Then between those dividers I have plastic sleeves in which the jobs reside.  Every individual job of any sort has a plastic sleeve of its very own.  It may be an art exhibition, a client job, a scholarship submission... anything I come across of interest or may be contacted about.

Due_date_spots

I attack each plastic sleeve with big yellow dots.  You can't miss them.  Each dot has important dates.  In this case this sleeve is regarding an artwork submission and requires two dots.  One for when the paperwork has to be mailed in, one for when the artwork is due.

Once I've mailed the submission I'll remove that sticker and refile the sleeve under the relevant month.  Which in this case will be far away in October.  I bet you that I'll forget about this until that month when I see it in the file again!  This filing system allows me to keep track of all of the work I have ongoing and ensure that I won't miss a deadline.  This is a great system especially when you have a client that needs drafts and revisions before a final work because you can just remove the plastic sleeve and place it in the relevant timeframe when you'll need it again.  It means I can keep on top of my chaotic schedule, which has to be a great thing.

Client_record_sheet

Most of the paperwork is filed as I receive it but for specific client jobs I have what is called a Client Record Sheet.  This has all the contact information for the client as well as the specifics about the job.  Then when I chat on the phone or have e-mail discussions over an ongong period I can note down any details that are necessary.  It allows me to have an easy point of reference to what I am doing.  So these sheets are filled out and also in their own sleeves along with any other information relevant to the job.  This includes quick sketches, reference photographs or images.  It also keeps track of the time spent on the job, any revisions required and whether additional costs need to be invoiced for expenses.

Diary

Last of all I have my diary.  This diary repeats everything in my project file in regards to due dates as well as everything else I have going on in my life.  A big mash of everything revolving around me which means one thing = organized chaos.  As you can see I love lists, so I tend to fill my days with lists.  I can never find the right diary for me so I just bought the chunkiest notebook I could find and wrote out all the dates of the year by hand at the top.  Then... magic!  I have a diary perfect for all of my needs.  :)

I'd love to know what kind of systems you may have in place to keep a little order in your life.  It could be something as simple as for shopping or a multi million dollar development.  I'd love to know what system you find works the best for you.

Independent Designers & Style

Style.  It is an important word and a vital one to the survival of an independent designer.  Their is no limit to what that word may be worth in value in regards to a designers work.  It could be a few dollars, it could be millions.  Every designer will have a specific style to their work which will set them apart.

Style is not something that can magically appear from a hat.  Style needs to develop through exploring ideas, experimenting with a variety of techniques and time.   Then, in time, the style of a designer can be start to be recognised in their work.  This is the time you can recognise a painter from the artwork (think Pro Hart), or a fashion designer from a garment (think Alannah Hill).  However the journey of developing style doesn't stop there, and will never stop.  Throughout a designers lifetime their style will constantly be altering and adapting in relation to their own journey, quite often cycling every five years.

So where does one start?  Well that is easy.  You just need to start!  Remember you can't have style without the journey.  I'm going to share some images (primarily artists & illustrators) to show you their development of their style so far.

As you can see from these examples that the journey each artist & illustrator has taken is quite apparent.  They've started off with some fantastic works which have developed into something completely different.  The early works are by no means the first artworks any have created, but they are a stepping stone in what is a life long journey.  Most of the comparisons have a few years of distance between the creating - and a lot can happen in that time.

No designer can plan what their future work will look like, it is just a matter of experimenting to see what will happen.  Just remember that you can't plan your style, over time it will find you.

So what are you waiting for?  Let us create!
